Permanent, Full-Time $37.50 per hour | 30–50 hours per week
TerraBurst is a specialized underground infrastructure contractor providing sewer and water replacement and rehabilitation services throughout Calgary and surrounding communities. We are seeking an experienced Hydraulic Excavator Operator – Underground Sewer & Water Construction. This is a hands-on position specifically focused on operating CAT 305 and CAT 308 hydraulic excavators for underground sewer and water construction. This is not a general heavy-equipment operator position. The successful candidate must have demonstrated experience operating similar-sized hydraulic excavators and performing precise excavation around live underground utilities and existing infrastructure.
Responsibilities
● Operate CAT 305 and CAT 308 excavators for underground sewer and water construction.
● Perform precise excavation and trenching for sewer and water service replacements.
● Safely excavate around live underground utilities, including gas, electrical, telecommunications, sewer and water infrastructure.
● Perform controlled excavation in restricted residential and commercial work areas where accuracy and careful machine operation are required.
● Perform trenching, backfilling, sloping and banking using the excavator.
● Read and interpret utility locates, maps, drawings and project specifications to determine excavation requirements.
● Coordinate excavation activities with ground personnel and spotters.
● Conduct pre-operational inspections and identify equipment deficiencies.
● Clean, lubricate and refuel excavators and perform minor equipment maintenance where appropriate.
● Participate in site-specific hazard assessments and identify hazards associated with excavation and underground utilities.
● Maintain safe working conditions around excavations, live utilities, structures, crew members and the public.
● Provide day-to-day direction to crew members when assigned as a working foreman while continuing to actively operate the excavator.
● Communicate site conditions, utility conflicts, safety concerns and project progress to field management.
Required Experience & Qualifications
● Secondary school graduation certificate.
● Minimum of 3 years of professional hydraulic excavator operating experience.
● Demonstrated professional experience operating hydraulic excavators.
● Experience operating hydraulic excavators comparable in size and operating characteristics to CAT 305 and CAT 308 machines.
● Demonstrated experience performing excavation for underground sewer and/or water infrastructure is required.
● Experience safely excavating around live underground utilities is required.
● Experience performing precision excavation in restricted or congested work areas.
● Experience with trenching, backfilling, sloping and banking.
● Ability to read and interpret utility locates, plans, drawings, maps and specifications.
● Strong knowledge of excavation and underground utility safety practices.
● Ability to coordinate effectively with ground personnel and spotters.
● Ability to provide direction to crew members while remaining a hands-on excavator operator.
● Valid driver's licence and acceptable driving record.
● Must be able to read and write English.
Safety Training & Certifications
Relevant training includes Leadership for Safety Excellence (LSE), Ground Disturbance Level II, CSTS, WHMIS, First Aid, H2S Awareness, TDG and applicable Occupational Health and Safety training. Required training and certifications must be completed prior to performing applicable work. Employer-paid training is available where required.
Work Locations & Environment
Work locations: Calgary and surrounding communities, including Okotoks, Bearspaw, Airdrie, Strathmore and Diamond Valley, Alberta. Employees travel to various residential and commercial project locations to complete underground sewer and water replacements. Work is performed outdoors in active construction environments and may involve varying weather conditions, excavations, live underground utilities, restricted-access properties and other site-specific hazards.
Compensation & Benefits
Wage: $37.50/hour
Hours: 30–50 hours per week
Employment Terms: Permanent, full-time
Schedule: Day, morning and occasional evening work and weekend work
